Week 2 of my 100 days project Scotland

It’s week 2 of the 100 days project, Scotland. You can find out more about the project and my own project plan here >

Week 1 was nature-themed and you can see what I made here > We had one lovely day but mostly it has been very windy so I’m glad to be back indoors with my theme for this week - the kitchen! I haven’t really explored food and kitchen utensils as textures before so it should be fun.

Day 8 - Rice

Saturday 23rd May 2020

I thought of rice straight away when I was thinking of good food textures. I had to make multiple tries to get a good impression in the clay and ensure the rice didn’t go all the way through! Eventually I found that I needed to roll the clay to 5 cards thickness and then gently press the rice in with my roller. When I tried to roll it in as I normally would with a texture I found it went too deep.

TIP: If you are using food or natural materials don’t worry too much if you can’t get it out of the clay before firing. It will burn off in the firing process.

Day 9 - Shreddies

Sunday 24th May 2020

As you can see I chose my favourite cereal Shreddies today. I think the impression is pretty good and It worked first time. I have some stuck in the clay which I’ll try to get out once it’s dry. If I try now when the clay is wet I expect it will just ruin the texture. One tip is you can just leave any organic material in the clay as it burns away during the firing process

Day 10 - cake tester

Monday 25th May 2020

I was having a rummage through the kitchen drawers and found my cake tester. The end of it is a great shape to make some pattern. I did a few practice pieces before deciding on this design and I look forward to seeing how it looks with patina
Right now I am making the silver clay pieces and filing them once they are dry. I will not be drilling or firing them for a while. I had the brainwave to make the neckpiece I’m making from these silver pieces reversible and to have a quote on the back. To do that I am going to need to have some or even all of the pieces made so I can arrange them. I don’t want to arrange them in order of making as I think it will look better in a more abstract order.

Day 11 - Scottish porridge oats

Tuesday 26th May 2020

When in Scotland get out the Scottish porridge oats! They make a good texture in the clay (swipe to see).
I am itching to fire some of the pieces now. I will hold off a bit longer because of the quote I’m putting on the back one letter at a time

Day 12 - gas lighter

Wednesday 27th May 2020

So I was back to rummaging in the kitchen drawers today and found this lighter for the gas ring. I really like the pattern that stamping the end has in the clay.

Day 13 - farfalle

The edge of the action man bowties aka farfalle made a great stamp for the clay today
