100 days project Scotland 2020

The 100 days project for Scotland starts on 16th May 2020. I haven’t participated before but I will be getting involved this year and I’m excited to share my project with you.

What’s the 100 days project?

The 100 days project was originally started in 2011 by graphic designer Emma Rogan. She had been inspired by reading about a class run at Yale called ‘100 days of design’. I met Isla Munro, the founder of the Scottish project, in 2017. At that time she was participating in the 100 days project and was creating and making origami cranes. I was impressed when she made and photographed one on the training course we both attended.

When the project started by Emma was put on hiatus, Isla started the Scottish 100 day project with Emma’s blessing. In 2018 and 2019 the project culminated in an exhibition in Edinburgh. We don’t know yet whether an exhibition will be possible this year but I will keep you posted.

There are just two rules:

  1. Repeat a simple task every day for the duration

  2. Record each day’s efforts

My project

I spent some time thinking about what I would be able to do every day for 100 days! With my work and possible travel (although who knows this year!) I wanted something I knew I could achieve that I could do even on days when I only had a minute or two and very little equipment. But also something I could spend more time on when I had the capacity.

In the end, I was inspired by Isla Munro’s 2019 project. She moulded found textures and made imprints using Plasticine. I work with silver clay which is a great material to use to record textures. Right now in every class I teach I make three textured pieces for a bracelet, you can see this below. So, I have decided to combine these ideas and create a textured silver circle every day for 100 days. I will then assemble them into a neck piece. I like the idea of making a part of the finished piece every day but I’m not sure yet what that’s going to look like! I like to work physically with the pieces to see how it comes together. Right now I imagine it to be a mix between a necklace and a cape! I may make it into a set of jewellery with a neck piece, bracelet and earrings. And I need to consider how to piece it together. But these are interesting puzzles for later. For now, I commit to making one silver piece with a different texture on it each day.

As there are 100 days I have been looking at how to keep the challenge going for myself so I have decided to set a different theme for textures each week. 100 days is 14 weeks and 2 days so I will have 14 different themes for my textures. I currently have a list of more than 14 themes which I am going to work on narrowing down. Examples are nature, in the kitchen, fabric and paper.

I will be sharing my daily progress over on Instagram @annaccampbell with the hashtag #100silvertextures

I also plan to do a weekly blog post with my texture theme for the week here on the blog so do pop back to have a look
